Zaandam is a city located in the province of North Holland within the Netherlands. Situated on the river Zaan just north of Amsterdam, it serves as the main urban center of the municipality of Zaanstad. The city holds significant administrative importance as the largest town in this region, which consists of seven distinct towns. Its geographic position makes it a key component of the broader Zaanstreek area, linking it closely to the capital while maintaining its own distinct municipal identity.

The settlement received official city rights in 1811 and operated as a separate municipality until 1974, when it merged into Zaanstad. Historically, Zaandam was formerly known as Saenredam during the Dutch Golden Age, when it functioned as a major milling center. Thousands of windmills powered saws that processed Scandinavian wood for shipbuilding and paper industries. The town is also linked to the whaling industry and preserved heritage sites like the Czar Peter House, where Tsar Peter I studied shipbuilding in 1697.

The city features a mix of industrial history and modern development, with the center currently undergoing reconstruction under the project Inverdan. Notable landmarks include the statue De houtwerker, installed in 2004 to commemorate the wood industry, and the Czar Peter House, one of the oldest wooden houses in the Netherlands built in 1632. The area around the river Zaan offers views of traditional windmills and open green pastures, providing a landscape where old-style industry clashes with natural scenery.

Cultural appeal draws from its artistic heritage, including Claude Monet’s stay in 1871, during which he created twenty-five paintings of the area. Visitors can explore the Zaan Region, possibly the oldest industrial area driven by wind rather than steam, through cycling or walking. The town hosts local pubs and venues with live music, particularly along the waterfront streets like Zuiddijk. Tourism infrastructure includes a visitor center offering maps and advice for exploring the surrounding historical and natural sites.

The city has a population of 78,682 as of 2021, with a statistical district encompassing surrounding countryside home to about 76,804 residents. The economy features notable businesses such as Ahold Delhaize headquarters and the first European McDonald's restaurant, which opened in 1971. Transport access is facilitated by two railway stations and direct trains from Schiphol Airport. The area supports various activities, including football at AZ Alkmaar Zaanstreek, founded in 1967.
