About

Plaza de Armas de Huaraz

This live webcam provides a real-time view of Plaza de Armas de Huaraz, the central main square of Huaraz in the Ancash Region of Peru. Located in the heart of the city, the plaza is surrounded by streets, buildings, shops and civic spaces and serves as an important gathering point for residents and visitors. The camera captures the changing activity around the square throughout the day, from pedestrians and local traffic to the everyday movement of people through central Huaraz. Weather, sunlight, cloud cover and seasonal conditions continually change the appearance and atmosphere of the plaza, while the level of activity varies between quieter periods and busier parts of the day. Huaraz is situated in the Callejón de Huaylas valley of the Peruvian Andes, surrounded by some of the country's most dramatic mountain landscapes. The city lies at a high elevation beneath the Cordillera Blanca, home to numerous snow-capped peaks, giving Huaraz a distinctive setting between the mountains and the valley.

Huaraz is a city in the Áncash Region of north-central Peru and the capital of Huaraz Province. It lies in the Callejón de Huaylas valley between the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra, at an elevation of approximately 3,050 metres above sea level. The city is an important administrative, commercial and cultural centre for the surrounding highland region.

Huaraz is widely known as a gateway to the Cordillera Blanca, one of the world's highest tropical mountain ranges. The surrounding landscape is characterised by dramatic snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, high-altitude lakes and mountain landscapes, including the famous peaks of Huascarán and Alpamayo. The nearby Huascarán National Park protects much of this exceptional alpine environment and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city has a long history dating to pre-Inca cultures, with the wider Áncash region being an important centre of the ancient Chavín civilisation. Modern Huaraz was heavily affected by the 1970 Ancash earthquake, which caused extensive destruction throughout the region and led to much of the city being rebuilt.

Today, Huaraz is a major destination for mountaineering, trekking and adventure tourism in Peru. It serves as a base for excursions into the Cordillera Blanca and surrounding valleys, while also remaining an important centre for local communities and the wider Áncash highlands.
