Solikamsk is a town located in Perm Krai, Russia, situated on the banks of the Usolka River near its confluence with the Kama River. It serves as the administrative center of Solikamsky District, although it is not part of the district itself. As an administrative division, it holds the status of a town of krai significance, incorporated separately from the surrounding rural areas.
The earliest recorded mention of Solikamsk dates to 1430, when miners and merchants discovered massive salt deposits in the area. The town's name derives from the Russian words for salt and the Kama River. Its growth accelerated in the seventeenth century with the establishment of the Babinov Road, the primary overland route to Siberia, and the operation of large salt-mining facilities by the Stroganov family.
The town features significant cultural heritage monuments, including the Trinity Cathedral with five domes and an octagonal bell tower built in 1713. Other notable sites include the governor's residence from the late seventeenth century, which is the oldest surviving house in the Urals, and the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. The area also contains the former Svyato-Troitskoe monastery buildings, which later housed a transit prison.
Solikamsk attracts visitors with its Salt Museum, located in the buildings of the Ust-Borovaya Saltworks established in 1878, and an old salt pit in use since 1906. The town is famous for its production of potassium chloride fertilizer. Cultural attractions include a local art museum housing icons from the Church of the Lord's Epiphany and various historic churches that showcase unique architectural elements found nowhere else in Russia.
The population of Solikamsk was recorded as 87,745 as of 2025. The economy is heavily tied to salt mining, with more than 11,000 people employed in the industry, including 3,000 working underground. The town is home to the Solikamsky State Teachers' Training Institute, a branch of Perm State University, and remains a key industrial center in the region.
