Andratx, Balearic Islands, Spain
ES- Andrach
Andratx is a municipality situated on the western tip of Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands along the Mediterranean east coast of Spain. It lies in the southwestern corner of the Sierra de Tramontana, the island's most significant mountain range, where the rugged backbone plunges into the sea. The area includes the towns of Port d'Andratx, Sa Coma, S'Arracó, Sant Elm, and Camp de Mar, as well as the uninhabited islet of Sa Dragonera.
The town is ancient, with Romans occupying the area in the 2nd century BC and naming it Andrachium. Evidence of this era includes found pottery and coins. Originally built inland from the coast to protect against Barbary pirate raids, the settlement later saw a system of observation towers erected in the 16th century for protection. From fourteen towers originally in Andratx and Calvià, twelve still exist today.
The municipality features a mix of densely populated southern valleys and virtually uninhabited northern mountains, with the highest point at 927 metres. Notable landmarks include the Church of Santa Maria de Andrach, the Castell de Son Mas which now serves as City Hall, and the Andratx Castle. The area also contains the ruins of a former Trappist monastery and the contemporary art venues CCA Andratx Cultural Center and Studio Weil.
Tourism is the main economic activity, having replaced agriculture and fishing which are now mostly for private consumption. The landscape offers rocky coasts with only one sandy beach at Camp de Mar, while Port d'Andratx serves as an exclusive resort and marina for yachts. Visitors can explore hiking trails like the GR 221 or visit the Natural Park of Sa Dragonera, declared in 1995.
The population was 12,195 as of 2025, reflecting a steady recovery since the 1950s and accelerated growth in the early twenty-first century. Andratx has a high percentage of foreign residents, including significant numbers from Germany, Britain, and France. Access is available via road from Palma or by TIB bus, with Port d'Andratx acting as a key transport hub for the region.
