Lekeitio is a town and municipality situated in the province of Biscay within the Spanish Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. Located approximately 53 kilometers northeast of Bilbao, it serves as an important coastal settlement on the Basque coast. The municipality functions as one of the most significant fishing ports in the region, anchoring its identity in maritime traditions and geographic proximity to the sea.
The town possesses deep historical roots, with evidence of human activity dating back millennia. Notably, cave art featuring etchings of lions was discovered in the Armintxe Cave in 2016, with the artwork estimated to be between 12,000 and 14,500 years old. This prehistoric heritage underscores the long-standing significance of the area, which has evolved from ancient habitation into a structured municipality with documented festivals and cultural milestones.
Architecturally, the most prominent landmark is the church of Santa María, a Gothic basilica constructed in the 15th century. The town's character is defined by its harbor and coastal geography, including the Isuntza beach within Lekeitio and the nearby Karraspio beach in the adjacent town of Mendexa. These natural features contribute to the town's appeal as a resort destination, particularly during the warmer months when tourism activity increases significantly.
Cultural life revolves around traditional festivals, most notably San Antolinak, held from 1 to 8 September in honor of the town's patron saint. A central and controversial element is the goose pulling event on 5 September, where participants compete to hold onto an oiled bird suspended from a rope across the harbor. This tradition, documented since the fifth century and celebrated continuously since 1877, draws attention for its unique mechanics and historical continuity.
The municipality has a population of 7,211 as of 2025. Its economy is supported by fishing and seasonal tourism, with visitors drawn to its beaches and cultural events. Lekeitio is also recognized as the birthplace of notable figures such as Resurrección María de Azkue, a prominent 19th-century Basque scholar and linguist. The town maintains its administrative role within Biscay while preserving its distinct linguistic and cultural heritage.
