Fort Myers Beach is a town situated on the north end of Estero Island in Lee County, Florida, United States. It lies along the Gulf of Mexico and is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is accessed from the mainland via a bridge spanning Estero Bay, positioning it as a distinct barrier island settlement within the broader Southwest Florida region.
The area was first inhabited by Calusa Indians approximately 2,000 years ago before Cuban fishermen established a village known as Ranchero in the late 1700s. American settlement began after the Homestead Act of 1862, with William Case developing the first subdivision and cottage rental industry in 1911. The island was originally named Crescent Beach until it was officially incorporated as Fort Myers Beach on December 31, 1995.
The town features a mix of residential areas and tourism infrastructure shaped by its development history. Notable sites include the Mound House archaeological site, Newton Beach Park, and the historic Seven Seas Cottage.
