La Pine is a city located in Deschutes County within the state of Oregon, United States. It sits in an isolated area of Central Oregon, positioned approximately 30 miles southwest of Bend along U.S. Highway 97. The community lies in the valley of the Little Deschutes River, a tributary of the Deschutes River, and is part of the Bend Metropolitan Statistical Area. Several peaks of the Cascade Range are prominently visible from the area, defining its geographic setting.

The area's first European-American settlement was established in the 1800s by French fur trappers. La Pine was founded in the 19th century with Huntington Road as its main street, originally bearing the name Rosland. A post office by that name began in 1897, followed by a townsite in 1900. Construction on the Oregon Trunk Railroad started in 1908, and the line later became part of the BNSF Railway, which continues to run through the city parallel to the highway.

The community consists of a loose collection of homes and businesses along U.S. Highway 97. Notable sites include Newberry National Volcanic Monument and LaPine State Park, which offers recreational opportunities provided by the river such as fishing, swimming, and canoeing. The city occupies seven square miles, with much of the former census-designated area lying outside its limits. The Deschutes Public Library also maintains a branch within the community.

The area provides various leisure activities centered around the Little Deschutes River and nearby natural attractions. Visitors can access local amenities such as the Legend Cider Company, which features a tasting room with a large outdoor area and rotating food carts. Dining options include establishments like the Hunan Chinese Restaurant located on U.S. 97. The community also supports accommodation services, including the Best Western Newberry Station for travelers.

The population was 2,512 people as of the 2020 Census, with a median age of 43.7 years. The city operates under a council-manager form of government and is represented in federal and state legislatures by specific district representatives. Transportation access is primarily via U.S. Route 97, with Oregon Route 31 terminating nearby. Fire services are provided by the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District.
