Sarasota is a city in and the county seat of Sarasota County, Florida, United States. It sits in Southwest Florida on Sarasota Bay, which is a lagoon on the Gulf Coast. The city serves as the administrative center for its county and is a significant municipality within the region.

The area was explored by the Spanish in the 16th century and settled by American William Henry Whitaker in the mid-19th century. Development accelerated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, influenced by Bertha Honore Palmer and the Ringling family. The municipal government was established when incorporated as a town on October 14, 1902, with John Hamilton Gillespie as the first mayor.

The city limits contain several barrier islands between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, including Lido Key, St. Armands Key, Bird Key, and the northern portion of Siesta Key. The downtown features office buildings and upscale condominiums, complemented by Saint Armands Circle on Saint Armands Key. This upscale outdoor shopping area is surrounded by Lido Key across the bay via the Ringling Causeway.

Sarasota is known for its vibrant arts community, cultural attractions, and beautiful beaches. Notable sites include the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota Opera, and numerous galleries. The city hosts the annual Sarasota Film Festival and the Sarasota Chalk Festival. Its coastline, including Siesta Beach, draws visitors year-round due to its fine white-sand beaches.

The population was 54,842 at the 2020 census. The economy is based on tourism, healthcare, education, and real estate. Access is provided by Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport and Interstate 75. Sarasota has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cooler winters, featuring distinct rainy and dry seasons.
