Nieuwpoort is a city and municipality situated in the province of West Flanders within the Flemish region of Belgium. Located on the Belgian sea coast, it serves as a significant coastal hub where the Yser River flows into the North Sea. The municipality comprises the main town of Nieuwpoort proper alongside the villages of Ramskapelle and Sint-Joris, forming a contiguous built-up area that stretches from the medieval inland center to the modern coastal zone.
The settlement obtained city rights in 1163 from Count Philip of Flanders and has historically served as a Dunkirker base and pirate nest. It was the site of the 1600 Battle of Nieuwpoort between Dutch and Spanish forces and played a critical role in World War I when sluice gates were opened to flood the polders and halt German advances. The historic Stadshalle Grain Hall and its belfry were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France site.
The city is defined by two distinct centers: the old medieval town center with cobblestone streets and the coastal tourist area featuring sandy beaches. Notable landmarks include the 35-meter high belfry, the Fish Market, and the Staketsel boardwalk extending into the North Sea. The area also features the Ganzepoot lock complex, which regulates water levels in the surrounding polders, and several monuments dedicated to World War I history, including the King Albert I Memorial.
As a beach resort and medieval port, Nieuwpoort attracts visitors with its fishing culture and historical sites. The daily fish market offers fresh catches from local boats, while the channel provides views of sailing ships and access to quiet nature reserve beaches. The town hosts cultural attractions such as Jan Fabre's statue Searching for Utopia and museums within the King Albert Monument, drawing tourists interested in both maritime heritage and coastal recreation.
The municipality had a population of 11,488 as of 2022, covering a land area of 31.00 km². Access is facilitated by the Coastal Tram, which connects Nieuwpoort to other coastal towns and links with railway stations in De Panne. The local economy benefits from tourism and fishing, with walking being the primary mode of transport within the town's compact districts and along its extensive harbor and beachfront areas.
