São Paulo serves as the capital city of the Brazilian state of São Paulo and stands as the most populous urban center in Brazil, South America, and the Americas. Located in the Southern Hemisphere, it exerts significant international influence across commerce, finance, culture, gastronomy, arts, fashion, technology, entertainment, and media. The city is recognized by UNESCO's Creative Cities Network as a "City of Film" and holds the title of "World Capital of Gastronomy." Additionally, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network classifies it as an alpha global city, highlighting its status as the largest urban area by population outside Asia.

Founded on 25 January 1554 by Jesuit priests including Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta, São Paulo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the American continent. Originally established as a mission to evangelize indigenous Tupi people, it evolved from a poor, isolated village into a strategic center for territorial expansion through the Paulista bandeirantes expeditions. Its economic opulence consolidated during the mid-19th-century coffee cycle, leading to landmark historical events such as the Cry of Ipiranga and the Modern Art Week. The city honors Paul the Apostle, with its Latin motto translating to "I am not led, I lead."

The metropolis is defined by its cosmopolitan character, hosting the largest Arab, Italian, and Japanese diasporas in the world within ethnic neighborhoods like Bixiga, Bom Retiro, and Liberdade. It features a skyline of towering skyscrapers, including the Mirante do Vale and Alto das Nações, alongside green spaces like Ibirapuera Park. The city has earned international titles such as "Tree City of the World" and "Ibero-American Green Capital," while also holding a Guinness World Record for its food security program. Greater São Paulo forms the São Paulo Macrometropolis, the first megalopolis in the Southern Hemisphere.

As a major cultural hub, São Paulo is the origin of artistic expressions like sertanejo music, Brazilian hip-hop, and samba paulista, and the culinary matrix for dishes such as bauru, coxinha, and picanha. It hosts world-renowned events including the São Paulo Art Biennial, Fashion Week, Lollapalooza, and the largest LGBT event globally, the Gay Pride Parade. The city offers diverse museums like the Museum of the Portuguese Language and the Latin American Memorial, alongside sporting events such as the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix and the Saint Silvester Road Race.

The municipality has a population of 11,904,961 as of 2025, while its metropolitan area is home to over 20 million inhabitants. São Paulo represents approximately 10% of Brazil's GDP and is the headquarters of B3, Latin America's largest stock exchange by market capitalization. It is a top science and technology cluster, home to the University of São Paulo and 63% of established multinationals in Brazil. The city is regularly ranked among the best for university students and serves as a primary economic engine for the nation.
