Boppard is a town and municipality located in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It sits within the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along the upper Middle Rhine where the river forms a distinctive bend known as the Bopparder Hamm. The town serves as a state-recognized tourism resort and functions as a middle centre for the region, with the nearest upper centre being Koblenz, situated approximately 22 kilometres away.

The area shows traces of settlement dating back 13,000 years to the Federmesser culture. During Roman times, the site hosted Vicus Baudobriga and later a Late Roman castrum before becoming a Frankish royal estate in 643. It was a free imperial city until 1309, when it was pledged to the Electorate of Trier. Despite periods of independence and conflict, including the Boppard War in 1497, it remained under Trier's influence until French occupation in 1794, before becoming part of Prussia in 1815.

Since 1976, Boppard has comprised ten municipal districts, including the main centre, Bad Salzig, and Hirzenach. The town features Romanesque architecture, city walls with defences dating to Roman times, and the Basilika St. Severus. Notable landmarks include the Alte Burg toll castle, the Kurfürstliche Burg housing a city museum, and the Vierseenblick lookout point accessible by chairlift. The town forest is the second largest in Rhineland-Palatinate, covering 43.6 square kilometres.

Boppard is a winegrowing centre where local wines are sold and sampled. The town developed into a spa and tourism hub in the 19th century with the opening of the Mühlbad baths. Visitors explore the old town market place, walk the Rheinburgenweg, and enjoy restaurants along the promenade. The area attracts cruise ship passengers and hikers, offering opportunities to view the meandering Rhine from elevated positions where hills create the illusion of four separate lakes.

The population was 15,771 as of 2024. The economy relies on tourism, wine production, and administration. Access is provided by the A61 motorway, the B9 road, and the West Rhine Railway connecting Mainz and Cologne. Scheduled boat services operate between Cologne and Mainz, with cruise companies like Viking stopping in town.
