Rhodes serves as the principal city and former municipality on the island of Rhodes within the Dodecanese region of Greece. Since the local government reform of 2011, it functions as the seat and a municipal unit of the broader municipality of Rhodes. The settlement is situated at coordinates 36.4333 N, 28.2167 E, occupying a strategic position on the island that has historically placed it at a crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
The city originated in 408 BC through the amalgamation of the ancient settlements of Ialyssos, Kamiros, and Lindos. It prospered during a Golden Age until Roman control in 164 BC, later enduring Byzantine, Knights Hospitaller, Ottoman, and Italian periods. The Medieval city, built by the Hospitallers, is recognized as one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The urban landscape is divided into the walled Old Town and the modern New Town, with the Acropolis located two kilometers southwest. The Old Town features approximately 200 unnamed streets, medieval buildings, mosques, and traditional fountains. Notable landmarks include the citadel, the Hafiz Ahmed Agha Library, and the ruins of the Colossus of Rhodes, which once stood as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
