Thasos is a Greek island located in the northern Aegean Sea within the East Macedonia and Thrace region. It stands as the northernmost major Greek island and ranks as the twelfth largest by area, covering 380 square kilometers. Administratively, it functions as a separate regional unit, having previously belonged to the Kavala Prefecture before the local administration reform of 2011. The island sits close to the coast of Eastern Macedonia, defining its geographic position in the North Aegean Islands group.

The island's history begins with Phoenician colonization, likely attracted by gold mines, who founded a temple to Melqart. Around 650 BC, Greeks from Paros established a colony, leading to a period of prosperity through mining and trade. Thasos later faced Persian domination, joined the Delian League, and endured a siege by Athens. It passed through Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman rule, becoming part of Greece in 1912 after the First Balkan War, following more than three centuries of Turkish control.

The landscape features high forested mountains, picturesque bays, and great sandy beaches, with terrain similar to Chalkidiki. The capital, officially Limenas Thasou, sits on the northern side, while Limenaria is a key settlement. Archaeological sites include the Heracleion sanctuary and remains from the Neolithic era. The island offers interesting archaeological sites and beach nightlife, with the lively south and east sides attracting younger crowds and the quieter west side appealing to older visitors.

Tourism is the most important economic activity, drawing visitors to its green landscapes and developed resorts. Agricultural products include honey, almonds, walnuts, and Throumba olives with protected designation of origin. The island has a rich mythological connection to Dionysus and Staphylus. Visitors engage in fishing, herding, and exploring the island's heritage, which includes ancient marble sources and churches from Late Antiquity found during various historical periods.

The population was 13,100 as of 2021. The economy relies heavily on tourism, alongside agriculture and fishing. Access is via ferry lines between Keramoti and Thasos town or Kavala and Skala Prinou, as the island lacks an airport. Travelers should note that overtourism in July and August can cause power cuts and water interruptions, making other times preferable for visits to avoid crowded conditions and infrastructure strain.
