Roermond is a city, municipality, and diocese situated in the Limburg province of the Netherlands. It lies on the lower Roer river on the east bank of the Meuse, positioned in the middle of the province which is bordered by the Maas to the west and Germany to the east. The town serves as a historically important commercial centre and was once a principal town in the duchy of Guelders. Its administrative significance is underscored by its role as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Roermond since 1559.

The area was originally inhabited by Celts, with Romans later building a bridge and founding the first town at what is now Voorstad Sint Jacob. Roermond received town rights in 1231 after being destroyed and rebuilt, eventually becoming the capital of the Overkwartier van Gelre around 1350. It belonged to the Duchy of Guelders until 1543, then passed through Spanish, Dutch, Austrian, and French control before joining the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1814. The town was occupied by Germans during World War II from 1940 to 1945.

The skyline is dominated by the towers of St. Christopher's Cathedral and Roermond Minster, while the town centre is a designated conservation area filled with significant buildings and monuments. The community includes population centres such as Voorstad Sint Jacob and Swalmen. Notable historical sites include the Minderbroederklooster, first mentioned in 1309, and the Roermond Charterhouse founded in 1376. The town also features the Peel boundary fault, where a significant earthquake occurred in 1992.

Roermond is a popular destination for Dutch, German, and Belgian tourists, known for its historic centre and water sports facilities along the Maasplassen lakes. The Designer Outlet Centre, opened in 2001, draws millions of visitors annually, complemented by ample shopping facilities in the city centre where shops are open on Sundays. The town is encircled by a green belt offering hiking and cycling opportunities, with nature reserves to the east and water recreation areas to the west.

The population was 57,308 as of 2016. The economy has seen growth due to the A73 highway and Roertunnel, though unemployment remained relatively high in 2010. Transport access is provided by Roermond railway station with frequent intercity and commuter services, as well as connections via the A73 and A52 highways. The region experiences floods, with major events occurring in 1993 and 1995, and is characterized by a climate suitable for outdoor recreation near the rivers Meuse and Roer.
