Foios is a municipality located within the comarca of Horta Nord in the Valencian Community of Spain. Situated at coordinates 39.5386, -0.3567, it functions as an administrative unit governed by a local corporation. The town square serves as the central hub for municipal activities and civic engagement.
The name Foios derives from the Latin word Fundus, meaning inheritance or farm, according to Gaspar Juan Escolano. The area contains remains of a Roman villa from the Alteimperial period known as the Flat of Foios. It was originally an Al-Andalus Rahal mentioned in 1235 and conquered by Jaime I in 1237 before passing through various private owners.
Historical ownership shifted from Roderic Eiximen of Llúcia to the Díez family, then to Guillem, and finally to Ramon Vilanova who bought the lordship in 1386. Eventually, Foios returned to the Crown of Aragon as a Villa Real, ceasing to be private property. The current land structure reflects this long history of royal and noble stewardship.
The municipality is home to notable individuals such as Ferran Torres, a footballer for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Political governance involves thirteen councilors elected every four years, with the City Council currently chaired by Coalició Compromís and PSPV-PSOE. The opposition includes representatives from the People's Party, Más Foios, and VOLEM.
Foios has a population of 7,995 as of 2025. The electoral census includes all registered residents over eighteen who are nationals of Spain or other European Union member countries. The town offers a glimpse into Valencian municipal life, combining historical depth with modern democratic structures in the heart of the Horta Nord region.
