Tías, Las Palmas, Spain
ES- Tias, Las Palmas
Tías is a town and municipality located in the southern part of the island of Lanzarote within the province of Las Palmas. It forms part of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands in Spain. The settlement sits approximately four kilometers from the south coast and ten kilometers west of Arrecife, which serves as the island capital. This geographic positioning places it within a distinct administrative framework that governs local affairs across the southern region of the volcanic landscape.
The area has seen significant development driven by tourism, particularly through the establishment of major hospitality infrastructure. Lanzarote's largest tourist resort, Puerto del Carmen, lies entirely within the municipal boundaries of Tías. This location was historically significant as the site where the first hotels on the island were constructed. The Gran Hotel and the Fariones hotel both opened their doors in 1967, marking a pivotal moment in the region's growth and transformation into a key destination for international visitors seeking leisure and relaxation.
The municipality encompasses several distinct settlements beyond the main town, including Mácher, La Asomada, Conil, and Masdache. These areas contribute to the diverse character of the local community and its spatial organization. The presence of Puerto del Carmen defines much of the built environment, offering a concentrated hub for accommodation and services. The layout reflects a blend of residential zones and tourist-oriented districts, creating a varied topography that supports both long-term inhabitants and seasonal travelers throughout the year.
Cultural connections are highlighted by notable residents who have called Tías home at various times. Portuguese writer and Nobel Prize laureate José Saramago lived in the town, maintaining ties with sister cities such as Azinhaga in Portugal, his birthplace. Other distinguished individuals include Spanish novelist Alberto Vazquez-Figueroa and model Helen Lindes, who was Miss Spain 2000. The community also honors Guillermina Fernández Díaz, born in June 1902, recognized as the oldest Canary Island resident, reflecting a deep local heritage.
The population of Tías is recorded at 21,613 as of 2025. The economy is heavily influenced by the tourism sector centered around Puerto del Carmen and its extensive hotel offerings. Access to the area is facilitated by its proximity to Arrecife, the island capital, which serves as a primary transport hub. The municipality maintains sister town relationships with Adeje and Castril in Spain, as well as Llanes in Spain, fostering international links and cultural exchange within the broader context of the Canary Islands.
