Melbourne is a city located in Brevard County, Florida, within the United States. Situated approximately 72 miles southeast of Orlando along Florida's Space Coast, it lies inland of the Indian River Lagoon with a small portion extending onto a barrier island. The region derives its name from its proximity to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center. Melbourne serves as a principal city within the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville metropolitan statistical area.
The area shows evidence of Paleo-Indian occupation dating to the late Pleistocene epoch, with mammoth bones discovered in the 1920s. First settlers arrived after 1877, and the town was originally named Crane Creek before being renamed Melbourne in honor of its first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector. The city officially formed in 1969 through the merger of Eau Gallie and Melbourne, a consolidation that doubled its size and established its modern boundaries.
Downtown Melbourne and most of the city are situated inland, while Melbourne Beachside has a presence on the South Beaches barrier island. The city features historic structures such as the Greater Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1885, and the Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home, which opened in the late 1890s. Urban blight was mitigated in the 1980s, and the area retains Victorian-era influences alongside mid-century developments like the Melbourne Shopping Center.
The city hosts various cultural events and maintains a diverse historical narrative, including its role during the Jim Crow era and subsequent integration. It is home to the Florida Institute of Technology, where the first school built in 1883 is on permanent exhibit. The area attracts visitors interested in its botanical northern limit for cultivated coconut palms and its connection to the Space Coast, offering a blend of natural landscapes and historical sites.
As of the 2020 census, Melbourne had a population of 84,678, with an estimated 87,561 residents by July 2024. The city has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, wet summers and warm, dry winters, with significant rainfall events recorded in recent decades. It is accessible via Interstate 95 and the Melbourne Orlando International Airport, which occupies land from a former Naval Air Station established during World War II.
