USSatellite Beach is a coastal city situated in Brevard County, Florida, within the United States. It occupies a barrier island positioned directly south of Patrick Space Force Base, forming part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The municipality is geographically defined by the Atlantic Ocean to its east and the Banana River to its west, creating a distinct peninsula-like environment along the local coastline.
The city was incorporated in 1957 by Percy L. Hedgecock alongside his brothers B.D. and Herbert, along with cousins Jimmy Caudle and Dumont Smith. Percy Hedgecock served as the town's first mayor from its incorporation until 1973. In subsequent decades, the community addressed environmental challenges, including planning for sea-level rise in 2010 and undertaking a $36 million beach restoration project in 2013 following damage from hurricanes in 2004.
As the largest beachside community in South Brevard County, Satellite Beach features 7.7 miles of shoreline, including ocean, river, and canal frontage. Key landmarks include Samsons Island Nature Park, which hosts relocated gopher tortoises and osprey nesting platforms, and Hightower and Pelican Beach Parks. The area also contains coquina rock outcrops classified as Essential Fish Habitat and fossilized Atlantic ghost crabs preserved in the beach sands.
The city supports a vibrant surf culture and hosts annual events such as the Ocean, Reef, and Beach Festival and the Holiday Boat Parade. Visitors can explore local dining options like Da Kine Deigo's Insane Burritos, known for Spanish-inspired meals, or Cibelli's Pizza Republic. The community also maintains Chabad of the Space & Treasure Coasts, the only traditional Jewish synagogue along the Brevard County coastline.
Satellite Beach had a population of 11,226 as of the 2020 United States census. Access to the city is facilitated by two major causeways, including FL-404 and Eau Gallie Boulevard, connecting it to mainland areas like Melbourne. The climate features overlapping tropical and temperate zones, with recorded extremes ranging from 24 °F in 1989 to 99 °F in 1981, supporting diverse wildlife including loggerhead sea turtles and West Indian manatees.
