The city is part of the Miami Valley region and serves as a key residential and commercial hub for the surrounding townships, including Clearcreek, Turtlecreek, Franklin, and Miami.
Settled as early as 1796, Springboro was formally founded in 1815 by Jonathan Wright under the original name Springborough. The town was predominantly Quaker in its early years and developed mills and a woolen factory by the 1830s, named for its abundant springs. It played a significant role as a stop on the Underground Railroad, providing hiding places for escaping slaves, and became the first city to erect an Ohio Underground Railroad Historic Marker in 1999.
The city features a historic district along Main Street with many original houses from the early 1800s. Notable landmarks include the Wright B Flyer Museum, which houses a flying replica of the Wright brothers' second airplane, and the Springboro Historical Society Museum detailing its Underground Railroad history. The area also includes the Dayton Mall on its northern edge and various parks such as Clearcreek Park and Kacie Jane Park.
Cultural attractions include the La Comedia Dinner Theatre, one of the nation's largest professional dinner theaters, and the Springboro Community Theatre. The city hosts Christmas in Historic Springboro, featuring a candlelight walk, caroling, and a parade. Visitors can explore traditional German-influenced bakeries like The Donut Haus or visit local taverns, while the public library serves as a community resource for residents and guests alike.
Springboro had a population of 19,062 as of the 2020 census, with significant economic growth beginning in the late 1990s. The city is served by Interstate 75, Interstate 675, and several state routes, with access via the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority.
