Guadalajara serves as the capital and most populous city of the western Mexican state of Jalisco. It is also the most densely populated municipality in the region, situated within the Atemajac Valley. As a major urban center, it functions as the economic hub for the Bajío region and holds significant administrative importance within Mexico's federal structure.
The settlement was established in early 1532 by Cristóbal de Oñate during an expedition led by Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán. After several relocations due to water shortages and conflict, it permanently moved to its current location in 1542. The city received its name from Guzmán's Spanish birthplace and was granted cityhood by the King of Spain that same year.
The historic center encompasses former villages annexed in 1669 and features colonial-era buildings alongside independence-period architecture. Notable landmarks include the Guadalajara Cathedral, the Degollado Theatre, the Templo Expiatorio, and the UNESCO World Heritage site Hospicio Cabañas. The city is divided into four districts, with the Centro Histórico serving as the primary tourist area filled with murals by José Clemente Orozco.
Guadalajara is a vital cultural center home to Mariachi, Tequila, and Birria, hosting events like the Guadalajara International Film Festival and the largest book fair in the Americas. It was named the American Capital of Culture in 2005 and has hosted global events including the 1970, 1986, and 2026 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 2011 Pan American Games.
The city proper had a population of 1,385,621 as of 2020, while the metropolitan area contains over five million residents. It is a center for business, technology, and tourism, with a booming electronics industry. The city ranks among the world's most productive and globally competitive cities, supported by numerous universities and research institutions.
