Colorado Springs is a home rule city serving as the county seat and most populous municipality in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. Situated in east-central Colorado along Fountain Creek, it lies approximately 70 miles south of Denver within the Front Range Urban Corridor. The city occupies a semi-arid steppe region bordered by the Southern Rocky Mountains to the west and high plains to the east. It stands at an elevation of 6,035 feet, positioning it over a mile above sea level near the base of Pikes Peak.
The area was originally inhabited by Ute, Arapaho, and Cheyenne peoples before becoming part of the Louisiana Purchase and later the Kansas Territory. Colorado City was formally organized in 1859 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, while Fountain Colony was laid out in 1871 and renamed Colorado Springs later that year. The town incorporated on June 19, 1886, and the county seat shifted to it in 1873. Early growth was influenced by English immigrants who locally referred to the settlement as Little London.
The city is defined by its dramatic geography and historic districts, including the Broadmoor suburb established in 1891 and the Garden of the Gods park featuring sandstone formations. Nikola Tesla operated an experimental station on Knob Hill from 1899 to 1901, drawn by the area's lightning activity. The city layout was designated into quadrants by Cascade Avenue and Washington Avenue in 1898. It remains the most extensive city by area in Colorado, encompassing significant natural landscapes and historic military installations.
Visitor appeal centers on outdoor recreation and historical significance, with Pikes Peak inspiring the song America the Beautiful. The city hosts the US Olympic training center established in 1977 and offers access to hiking trails like Barr Trail. Cultural attractions include the Garden of the Gods and various mining exchange histories from the late nineteenth century. The region attracts tourists seeking technical rock climbing, cog railway ascents, and experiences related to its military heritage and aerospace history.
The population was 478,961 as of the 2020 census, making it the second-most populous city in Colorado. The economy is driven primarily by the military, high-tech industry, and tourism. Transportation access includes Interstate 25, Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, and Greyhound services. The climate features a dry-winter monsoon influence with abundant sunshine, averaging 243 sunny days annually, and moderate snowfall concentrated in March.
