Abetone is a locality situated in the Province of Pistoia within the Tuscany region of Italy. It lies approximately eighty kilometres northwest of Florence and forty-nine kilometres northwest of Pistoia. Historically, it functioned as an independent comune, but since 2017, it has served as a frazione of Abetone Cutigliano. This administrative change marks its current status within the broader municipal structure of the area.
The settlement originated in 1732 as a custom post located on the highest point of the main road connecting the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena. Its name, meaning large fir in Italian, derives from a significant tree that was felled to allow construction to proceed. This origin story highlights its early role as a strategic transit point between two distinct historical duchies.
From the early twentieth century, Abetone developed into a popular skiing resort, attracting visitors seeking winter sports activities. The area is also notable for being the birthplace of Zeno Colò, an Italian skier born in 1920 who achieved international recognition. Additionally, the location served as the finish line for the fifth stage of the 2015 Giro d'Italia, cementing its place in sporting history.
Key landmarks include the Orto Botanico Forestale dell'Abetone, which is a botanical garden dedicated to forest flora. Visitors can also view the Monumento Internazionale alla Pace, a monument dedicated to peace. These sites offer cultural and natural attractions that define the character of the locality, providing points of interest for those exploring the region's heritage and landscape.
The population of Abetone was recorded as 629 in 2017. The economy has historically been influenced by its role as a transit hub and later as a tourism destination for skiing. Access to the area is facilitated by its position on the main road between Tuscany and Modena, making it a reachable destination for travelers exploring the northwest of Pistoia and the wider Tuscan region.
