Arco di San Lazzaro
This live cam looks toward the Arch of San Lazzaro, also known as Porta Farnese, and frames the historic Via Emilia, the ancient Roman road built by consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus between 189 and 187 B.C., which runs across all of Emilia Romagna. The camera faces west along this important urban axis, capturing passing traffic, the flow of daily life, and the enduring presence of one of Parma’s most recognisable monumental gateways.

Parma is a city located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. It serves as the capital of the province bearing its name within this administrative division. The urban area is situated in the northern part of the country, characterized by its position in the Po Valley. This setting places it within a historically significant geographical zone that has influenced its development and cultural identity over centuries.
The city was likely founded and named by the Etruscans, with the name possibly derived from a round shield or the area's metaphorical function as a defense against Gauls. A Roman colony was established there in 183 BC, and it later gained the title of Julia during the Empire. Throughout the Middle Ages, it became an important stage on the Via Francigena, connecting Rome to Northern Europe, and evolved through various rulers including the Farnese family and the Papal States.
The city is divided into two parts by the stream of the same name, with the district on the west side known as Oltretorrente. Its architecture reflects its long history, featuring landmarks such as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta and the adjacent baptistery built in the late 12th century. The historic center includes Piazza Duomo and the Palatine Library, which houses a significant collection of Hebrew manuscripts.
Parma is renowned for its rich gastronomical tradition and food culture. Two of its most famous specialties are Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Prosciutto di Parma. The city also boasts a strong cultural heritage, being home to the University of Parma, one of the oldest universities in the world. Its artistic legacy includes notable art collections and the work of the Royal Printing Works directed by Giambattotti Bodoni.
The population of Parma was recorded as 196,764 as of 2023. Access to the city is facilitated by the Aeroporto Giuseppe Verdi and a railway station with connections to Bologna and Milan. The historic center is largely walkable, and the terrain is flat, making biking popular among locals. The city offers tourist information services and various accommodations for visitors exploring its architectural and culinary attractions.
