Montefalco, Perugia, Italy
ITMontefalco is a historic hill town located in the Umbria region of Italy. It sits on the summit of a hill in southern Umbria, south of Assisi and north of Spoleto, with the Topino and Maroggia rivers running at its foot. The municipality includes numerous localities such as Argentella, Belvedere, and Fabbri, alongside rural dispersed dwellings. Administratively, it functions as a comune within the province of Perugia, having been granted the title of city by Pope Pius IX in April 1848.
The town's origins are disputed, with some historians linking it to the Roman municipium of Falisco Umbro or the knight Curione. It first appears in records in 1180 when its castle submitted to Spoleto, and it later sided with the Guelph party during medieval struggles. The name Montefalco is said to derive from a hunting falcon gifted by Emperor Frederick I. The town suffered devastation from plague in 1464 and 1529, as well as an earthquake in 1832, before being annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
Montefalco is characterized by its walled summit and narrow streets leading to the Piazza del Comune. Notable architecture includes the Gothic Chiesa Sant'Agostino, built between 1279 and 1285, and the deconsecrated Chiesa San Francesco, which houses the town museum with works by Perugino. The nearby Convento di San Fortunato contains highly regarded frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli. The town is recognized as one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia, celebrated for its attractive horizon and historic buildings.
The town is a renowned wine-producing center, closely associated with the Sagrantino grape variety cultivated almost exclusively within the municipality. Visitors are drawn to the area for its DOCG red wines, including the dry Sagrantino and passito styles, as well as Montefalco Rosso. The community sponsors Settimana Enologica, or Wine Week, around Easter. The local economy benefits from wine tourism, with numerous wine shops in the central square offering tastings of regional vintages.
Montefalco had a population of 5,357 as of 2023. The surrounding countryside is fertile, producing olives, cereals, and grapes. Access is available by car via the E45 highway from Rome or by train to the nearby station at Foligno. The territory is described as very fertile, particularly in olives, which are a major export. The town offers extensive views of the surrounding Umbrian countryside, attracting visitors seeking both cultural heritage and culinary experiences.
