Warsaw, officially the Capital City of Warsaw, serves as the capital and most populous city of Poland. It is situated on the Vistula River in east-central Poland within the Masovian Voivodeship. As a major political, economic, and cultural hub, it functions as the country's seat of government and is classified as an alpha global city.
The city traces its origins to a small fishing settlement that became the seat of the Duchy of Masovia in 1413. It rose to prominence in 1596 when King Sigismund III moved the royal court from Kraków, later serving as the capital of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth until 1795. Much of its historic core was destroyed during World War II but was reconstructed, earning UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1980.
The city area comprises 18 districts and features a mix of architectural styles, including the reconstructed Old Town and elegant boulevards. Notable landmarks include the Royal Castle, Sigismund's Column, Wilanów Palace, and the Varso Tower, which is the tallest building in the European Union. The city is also known as a green capital, with approximately a quarter of its area occupied by parks.
Warsaw hosts significant cultural institutions such as the University of Warsaw, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Warsaw Grand Theatre. It offers a variety of museums, galleries, and tourist attractions, alongside a vibrant nightlife and cafe culture. The city also celebrates its heritage through events like the annual Warsaw Marathon and maintains a strong presence in European arts and education.
The population is officially estimated at 1.87 million residents within a greater metropolitan area of around 3.5 million. It is served by three international airports, with Warsaw Chopin Airport being the busiest, and features an extensive public transport network including a metro system. The city is a significant economic centre, home to the largest stock exchange in Central and Eastern Europe.
