L'Ametlla de Mar is a municipality situated in the Baix Ebre comarca within the coastal region of Catalonia, Spain. It occupies a specific stretch of coastline bounded by Cap de Terme to the north and barranc de l'Àliga to the south. The town shares its southern boundary with El Perelló, while its north-western edge meets Tivissa along the Ebro riviera, and its north-eastern border touches Vandellós and l'Hospitalet de l'Infant in the Baix Camp comarca. This geographic positioning defines its administrative and physical context within the broader Catalan landscape.
The town's cultural heritage is anchored by a museum of traditional pottery located in the Sant Jordi housing estate, approximately five kilometers from the center. Established through the Martí-Castro private foundation in 1992, the museum opened to the public on May 5, 2001, with the local council assuming management responsibilities from 2000 onwards. This institution preserves the region's artisanal history, reflecting a long-standing commitment to maintaining local crafts and historical continuity within the community's modern development.
The municipality encompasses several large housing estates, including Calafat, Sant Jordi d'Alfama, les Tres Cales, and Roques Daurades. Its coastline stretches for sixteen kilometers, featuring thirty bays and beaches characterized by fine white sand or smooth pebbles, surrounded by pine trees and crystal-clear waters rich in Posidonia. The area has been awarded five blue flags for its beaches and one for the Marina, making it the second municipality in Catalonia to receive such recognition, highlighting its natural beauty and environmental standards.
Cultural life revolves around significant festivals, including the main celebration on February 2 honoring Mare de Deu de la Candelera, the patron saint, featuring a candle-lit procession. Other events include Saint Peter's Day for fishermen on June 29 with a maritime procession, Corpus Christi on May 29 with street decorations, and Saint George's Day at Castell de Sant Jordi. Gastronomy is central to the visitor experience, with seafood cuisine derived from the local fishing fleet, including auctions of galeras shrimp and red tuna, alongside dishes like fideos rossejats.
The population of L'Ametlla de Mar stands at 7,446 as of 2025. The economy is supported by fishing, tourism, and active sports, with the port hosting a large tuna fishing fleet and a sailing club with 225 berths. Transport access is facilitated by the AP 7 motorway, the N-340 road, and regional trains from Barcelona. The town offers extensive active tourism options like diving and cycling, and serves as a staging point for the GR 92 long-distance footpath, linking to nearby coastal towns.
