Bulancak, Giresun, Turkey
TRBulancak is a town situated in Giresun Province on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. It lies near the city of Giresun and serves as the administrative seat of Bulancak District. The municipality was established in 1887 and officially became a district seat in 1934, marking its formal integration into the regional governance structure.
The region's history extends back to the Hittites, with the area known as the land of the Azzi between 1400-1200 BC. Milesians established the trading colony of Kerasous nearby, and later periods saw rule by Persians, Macedonians, and the Kingdom of Pontus. After Roman and Eastern Roman control, it became part of the Empire of Trebizond, where it was named Terastios during the Komnenos period.
The town's geography features a rapid rise from the coast, creating rough terrain rich in vegetation. Hazelnut orchards dominate the landscape up to 2000 meters, while chestnut forests and various tree species like alder, elm, and hornbeam appear inland. The area reflects typical Black Sea geographical characteristics, with diverse flora changing according to altitude.
Cultural heritage includes influences from Chepni Turks, Pontic Greeks, Laz immigrants, and refugees from Batumi. The football club Bulancakspor represents the local sports scene. Traditionally, the economy relies on fishing and agriculture, with hazelnuts being the primary agricultural product and main source of income for the region's inhabitants.
