South Burlington is a city located in Chittenden County, Vermont, within the United States. It serves as a principal city of the Burlington metropolitan area alongside its neighbor, Burlington. Geographically, it sits in western Chittenden County, bordered by municipalities including Burlington, Winooski, Colchester, Essex, Williston, and Shelburne. A significant portion of Lake Champlain extends to the New York state line as part of the city, with the Winooski River running along its northern edges.

The area was first granted by the Province of New Hampshire on June 7, 1763, as part of Burlington township. The Town of Burlington was organized circa 1785, and in 1865, the unincorporated village of Burlington became a city while the remaining town area was incorporated as South Burlington. The Town of South Burlington later incorporated as a city in 1971, becoming the City of South Burlington.

The city features City Center, a walkable downtown zone zoned for mixed-use development interspersed with amenities. This area includes Market Street and Garden Street, lined with businesses, apartments, and trees, alongside a 9.4-acre park with walking paths and natural landmarks. Notable sites include the University Mall, Vermont's largest mall, and Red Rocks Park on Lake Champlain. Overlook Park offers scenic views of the lake and Adirondacks.

South Burlington hosts the headquarters of Ben & Jerry's and serves as a base for the Vermont Air National Guard. The city is home to Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport, which provides commercial service to major hubs. Visitors can explore various parks with walking trails, such as Farrell Park and Veterans Memorial Park. The area also includes the Magic Hat Artifactory brewery and Infinity Brewing for craft beer experiences.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, the population was 20,292, making it the second-most populous city in Vermont after Burlington. The economy is highly diversified with major employers including BETA Technologies and OnLogic. Transportation access is provided via Interstate 89, Interstate 189, U.S. Route 2, and U.S. Route 7. Green Mountain Transit offers bus service to the airport and other key locations within the region.
