Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and serves as the capital of the canton of Zurich. Located in north-central Switzerland, it sits at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich where the lake meets the river Limmat. Although Bern holds the status of the Swiss federal capital, Zurich functions as a primary cultural and administrative center for German-speaking Switzerland. Its strategic position has made it a hub for railways, roads, and air traffic within the country.
Evidence of early settlements in the area dates back more than 6,400 years, with permanent habitation established for over 2,000 years. The Romans founded the town as Turicum, a tax-collecting point on the Limmat border. During the Middle Ages, Zurich gained imperial immediacy and became an independent city. In 1519, under Huldrych Zwingli, it became a primary center of the Protestant Reformation in Europe, leading to significant changes in state matters and civil life.
The city is home to numerous museums and art galleries, including the Swiss National Museum, Natural History Museum, and Kunsthaus. Schauspielhaus Zürich is considered one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking world. The historic Fraumünster abbey, founded in 853, played a key role in early governance. The city also hosts ETH Zurich, a leading technical university that has produced many Nobel laureates and innovations.
Zurich is an international financial center home to major banking conglomerates and headquarters for organizations like FIFA. It offers a high standard of living with clean, efficient infrastructure. Visitors can explore its cosmopolitan atmosphere, influenced by people from across Switzerland and beyond. The city preserves its history through the Zunftordnung guild laws, which survive today in a mostly ceremonial role, reflecting its evolution from an autonomous republic.
As of 2025, the municipality has a population of 452,421, while the urban area was home to 1.45 million people in 2020. The Zurich metropolitan area had a total population of 2.1 million in 2020. Both Zurich Airport and the main railway station are the largest and busiest in the country. The official language is German, with Zurich German as the local dialect, while French, Italian, and Romansh names also exist for the city.
