St. Augustine is a city in and the county seat of St. Johns County, Florida, United States. Located on the Atlantic coast of northeastern Florida, it sits approximately 40 miles south of downtown Jacksonville. The city serves as the administrative center for its county and is part of Florida's First Coast region within the broader Jacksonville metropolitan area. Its geographic position has historically defined its role as a strategic coastal settlement.

Founded on September 8, 1565, by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the contiguous United States. Named after the feast day of St. Augustine, it served as the capital of Spanish Florida for over two centuries before becoming the capital of British East Florida in 1763. It later functioned as an alternating capital of the Florida Territory until Tallahassee became the permanent capital in 1824.

The city is defined by its distinctive historical character, featuring narrow colonial streets and Spanish-style architecture. Key landmarks include Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century Spanish fort that has never been captured, and St. George Street, a major pedestrian thoroughfare lined with historic houses. The downtown area also features grand late-19th-century hotel buildings constructed by railroad magnate Henry Flagler, which tower over smaller reconstructed historic homes.

St. Augustine attracts tourists through its remarkable historic streets, panoramic bayfront views, and romantic ambiance. Visitors can dine on terraces overlooking brick streets, view art in unique galleries, and explore sites older than the United States itself. The city offers diverse activities ranging from parasailing over unspoiled beachfronts to attending concerts under the stars, blending high culture with recreational opportunities.

The city had a population of 14,329 at the 2020 census, up from 12,975 in 2010. Its economy is heavily influenced by tourism, driven by its status as a major tourist attraction since the late 19th century. The area is accessible via nearby Jacksonville and benefits from its location on the Atlantic coast, offering easy access to waterways and beaches that complement its historic urban core.
