Milwaukee is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, situated on the western shore of Lake Michigan in the southeastern portion of the state. It serves as the county seat of Milwaukee County, which is both the most populous and densely populated county in Wisconsin, containing approximately 15% of the state's total population. The county is uniquely completely incorporated, with no unincorporated town jurisdictions, and contains 19 municipalities including cities and villages.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Menominee, Fox, Sauk, and Potawatomi. Milwaukee County was created in 1834 from Michigan Territory and organized in 1835, with its boundaries finalized in 1846 when Waukesha County was separated. The city itself developed from three dueling settlements: Juneautown, Kilbourntown, and Walker's Point, which merged to form the modern downtown area with its distinctive diagonal bridges connecting non-aligning street grids.

The city is defined by its industrial heritage and distinct neighborhoods that reflect historical immigrant patterns. It was once home to four of the world's largest breweries, earning the nickname Brew City, and remains home to major corporations like Miller Brewing and Harley-Davidson. The urban landscape features a mix of German and Polish architectural influences, with historic districts in the Near North, Northwest, and Near South sides that have evolved through significant demographic shifts over the last century.

Milwaukee celebrates its heritage as a major center for beer-brewing and its strong German and Polish communities through numerous festivals. It hosts Summerfest, recognized as the world's largest music festival, alongside other cultural events that highlight its identity. The city also attracts visitors with its professional sports teams, the Milwaukee Bucks and Milwaukee Brewers, and landmarks such as Harley-Davidson's massive anniversary celebrations, which draw enthusiasts from around the globe.

As of 2020, the city's population is approximately 600,000, while the broader metropolitan area holds about 1.6 million residents. The local economy is supported by major employers in brewing and manufacturing, alongside a robust tourism sector driven by its festivals and sports venues. Located on Lake Michigan, the climate influences seasonal activities, with summer being the peak time for outdoor events and festival attendance in this southeastern Wisconsin hub.
