It occupies a specific geographic position on the eastern shore of Lake Fagnano, located in the southern part of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The town was officially founded on October 9, 1972, establishing its modern administrative history. The name Tolhuin derives from the Selkʼnam language, where it translates to mean like a heart.
