North Vancouver is a municipality city located on the North Shore of the Burrard Inlet in British Columbia, Canada. It forms part of the Metro Vancouver regional district and sits directly across the inlet from downtown Vancouver. The urban core is largely synonymous with the downtown town centre of Lonsdale, making it the smallest and most urbanized community situated north of the city of Vancouver.
European settlement began in 1863 when T.W. Graham and George Scrimgeour established Pioneer Mills at the site of Moodyville. Sewell Prescott Moody later bought the business, creating a thriving lumber community that became the Moodyville Sawmill Company. The District of North Vancouver was incorporated on August 29, 1891, before the City of North Vancouver was carved out in 1907 to reserve local tax revenue for major developers' properties.
The city is surrounded by mountains and water, featuring residential high-rises in Central and Lower Lonsdale. Key landmarks include Waterfront Park, Lonsdale Quay, and the Shipyards area near the former Wallace Shipyard. The Polygon Gallery, Centennial Theatre, and Presentation House Theatre are notable cultural sites, while the North Shore mountains provide extensive drainage systems including the Capilano River and Seymour River.
The area offers significant outdoor appeal with hiking trails, mountain biking, and skiing at Grouse Mountain and Mount Seymour. Visitors can access the waterfront via the SeaBus or explore local heritage sites like the Museum and Archives of North Vancouver. The region's history is deeply tied to logging and shipbuilding, with the Shipyards area preserving the story of the wartime cargo vessel construction that once defined the local economy.
The population was 52,898 as of 2016. The economy includes shipping, chemical production, and film production alongside its industrial base. Access is provided by the Lions Gate Bridge, the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing, and the SeaBus passenger ferry. North Vancouver has an oceanic climate with cool, rainy winters and dry, warm summers.
