Loen, Vestland, Norway
NOLoen is a village situated in Stryn Municipality within Vestland county, Norway. It lies in the inner part of the Nordfjord region, positioned at the easternmost end of the Nordfjorden. The settlement is located approximately six kilometres north of Olden and eleven kilometres southeast of the municipal center of Stryn. This geographic placement places it at the intersection of deep valleys and the grand Nordfjord, surrounded by high mountains.
The area contains some of Norway's oldest farms, including Sæten, Tjugen, and Loen, which were likely established long before the time of Christianity. The upper valley was devastated by two rockfall slides in 1905 and 1936 that created huge waves, killing 135 people and sweeping away most houses and vegetation. Despite this tragic history, the historic Loen Church remains a key heritage site in the village.
The landscape is defined by the lake Lovatnet to the southeast and nearby attractions like Jostedalsbreen National Park and the mountain Skåla. Notable landmarks include the Hotel Alexandra, established in 1884, and the Loen Skylift, built in 2017. The village also features a Via Ferrata starting behind the hotel and ending at Mount Hoven, offering panoramic views of the surrounding glaciers and fjords.
Visitors are drawn to the region for its fine glaciers, all branches of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in mainland Europe. Activities include glacier walking on Bødalsbreen, hiking trails like the Lovatnet walk, and visiting the Briksdal glacier. The area is also home to lovely lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, with the Singerheimen museum hosting artifacts from American explorer William Singer.
Access is provided by route 60 connecting to E39, with express buses from Bergen, Førde, Ålesund, and Trondheim. The closest airport is Sandane, while other options include Oslo, Ørsta-Volda, Førde, and Sogndal airports. Accommodation ranges from budget campsites like Tjugen Camping to mid-range hotels such as Hotel Loenfjord. The best time for outdoor activities is typically between May and October.
