Badia is a comune located in South Tyrol, northern Italy, serving as one of the five Ladin-speaking communities within the Val Badia region. Situated in the southern, upper part of the valley along the Gran Ega river, it is surrounded by the steep limestone peaks of the scenic Dolomites mountain range. The municipality forms a key part of the broader Ladinia cultural area and includes the Alta Badia ski resort at the top end of the valley.
The valley estates have belonged to the Benedictine nunnery of Sonnenburg near St. Lorenzen since the 12th century, with the name Abtei first appearing in a 1325 deed. The lands were originally received from the Aribonid counts before passing to the Austrian House of Habsburg after the extinction of the House of Görz in 1500. The Sonnenburg monastery was secularised by Emperor Joseph II in 1785, and a parish church was erected in 1347.
The municipality contains several frazioni including La Ila, San Ciascian, and Badia proper, which consists of Pedraces and San Linêrt. Notable landmarks include the Church of the Holy Cross, consecrated in 1484 near the birthplace of Saint Josef Freinademetz, and the parish church of San Ćiascian, dedicated to Saint Cassian of Imola and consecrated in 1782. The area also features the Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus, which exhibits a cave bear skeleton.
Tourism is the most important contributor to the local economy, drawing visitors to the Dolomites for skiing and hiking. The region hosts the annual Maratona dles Dolomites bicycle race, which starts in La Ila. Cultural heritage is preserved through the Ladin language and history, with natural areas like the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park offering notable summits such as Sas dla Crusc.
The population was 3,532 as of 2023, with linguistic distribution showing 91.67% speak Ladin, 6.05% Italian, and 2.28% German as first languages according to the 2024 census. Around 69% of the population works in the service sector, while access is provided by road from La Val and via mountain passes like Valparola and Gardena, which may close during harsh winter conditions.
