Bishkek serves as the capital and largest urban city of Kyrgyzstan, while also functioning as the administrative center of the Chüy Region. Situated at an altitude of approximately 800 metres just off the northern fringe of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, it lies near the border with Kazakhstan. The city occupies a fertile steppe area drained by the Chüy River, positioned within the Chui Valley at the foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range.

The settlement originated in 1825 when the Khanate of Kokand established a fortress to control caravan routes and collect tribute. Russian forces destroyed this fort in 1860, leading to a new Russian settlement in 1868 under the name Pishpek. The city became the capital of the Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast in 1925 before being renamed Frunze in 1926 after Bolshevik leader Mikhail Frunze. It regained its modified original name, Bishkek, in February 1991 following Kyrgyzstan's independence.

The city features wide boulevards and marble-faced public buildings mixed with Soviet-style apartment blocks surrounding interior courtyards. Streets follow a grid pattern flanked by narrow irrigation channels that provide shade during hot summers. Key landmarks include the White House, the main government building, and Ala-Too Square, which hosts an independence monument. The central area is laid out on a rectangular grid plan with Chüy Avenue as its primary east-west corridor.

Bishkek offers diverse cultural attractions including the Kyrgyz State Historical Museum and the State Museum of Applied Arts in the city center. Visitors can explore Osh Bazaar, a large picturesque produce market, or the Dordoy Bazaar, a major retail hub on the city's edge. The city also boasts the Kyrgyz National Philharmonic concert hall and numerous parks featuring statues of historical figures like Mikhail Frunze and Ivan Panfilov.

The population was recorded at 1,191,000 as of 2025, with earlier estimates placing it around 1,200,000 in 2024. As Kyrgyzstan's financial center, all commercial banks are headquartered here, though the economy has shifted from Soviet-era industry to services and trade. The city is connected to the Turkestan–Siberia Railway and has an international airport. It experiences a temperate continental climate with hot summers and smoggy winters.
