As an industrial settlement, it serves as the administrative center for the broader municipality that includes several surrounding villages.
The town's development was significantly influenced by the Gutmann family during the 19th and 20th centuries. Their impact led to the replacement of vast Slavonian oak forests with farmland. A section of the working-class quarters established by Salamon H. Gutmann in 1884 eventually became part of the modern town, marking a key era in its historical evolution.
